       The Research and Development Department aims to provide the hydrometeorological and environmental quality monitoring system with an up-to-date technical basis. Its responsibilities are:

• Scientific-methodical provision of the SHS subdivisions activity;

• Organization of the scientific researches in the relevant SHS activity areas;

• Introduction and implementation of the national and international standards in the relevant SHS activity areas;

• Technical provision of the SHS subdivisions and of the national observations network;

• Management of the communication network of SHS;

• Participation in the process of dissemination of hydrometeorological and environmental quality information to the state authorities and population.

       The Department includes the following subdivisions:

• Research and Long Term Forecasts Centre (RLTFC);

• Measurement Means Centre (MMC);

• Communication and Information Technology Center (CITC).
