Research and  Long-Range Forecasts Center

Research and Long Range Forecasts Center (RLRFC) is part of the Research and Development Department and carries out research activities regarding the regional hydrometeorological issues, provides guidance to new scientific researches, elaborates new directions of scientific research, generalizes the information regarding the positive results in the field of hydrometeorological provision for human activity and in the field of efficient usage of weather and climate information.

Also, the RLRFC issues monthly and season meteorological forecasts, as well as analyzes the possibility of severe hydrometeorological phenomena triggering during these periods of time.

The Center aims at facilitating the collaboration of SHS subdivisions with other similar institutions in our country and abroad, thus establishing the possible spheres of practical usage of research products.

The results accomplished by RLRFC and their application in the SHS operative practice contributes to a vast acknowledgement of the regional hydrometeorological conditions and their influence on the national economy, thus being vital for increasing the informational potential of possible end users.

The RLRFC specialists are experienced in processing and interpretation of meteorological, hydrological and environmental quality monitoring observations, combining effectively the knowledge of classical meteorology, hydrology and climatology with contemporary methods of approaching hydrometeorological issues. The RLRFC controls and keeps evidence of new scientific and practical achievements in the field of global forecasting and participates actively in the issuance of scientific reports and publications. The strong theoretical basis enables the specialists to combine actively their knowledge in different hydrometeorological fields. At the same time, the specialists of the Center are participating in the elaboration of a new important publication “Moldova’s Climate”, which reflects the present climate conditions on the territory of the Republic of Moldova and the last achievements in the field of regional climatology.

One of the main functions of the Center consists in creating and actualizing the electronic version of catalogues regarding the hazardous hydrometeorological events on the territory of Moldova. The results of these studies are used in operative activities and contribute to solving a large number of practical problems.

Taking into account the function of SHS regional climate monitoring, the Center aims at researching natural and anthropogenic climate changes on the territory of Moldova and evaluating the proportions and laws of these changes, in order to service the national economy and scientific institutions.

Due to the bigger interest of end users in the prospect of regional climate evolution, the RLRFC is activating in the field of climate modeling, uncertainties and climate change risk assessment and highlighting regional particularities, influenced by human activity. In this context, the Center cooperates with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, participating in the elaboration of the fifth national report regarding climate change.

At the same time, the specialists of the Center participate actively in the international data exchange and contribute to the implementation of decisions regarding weather and climate issues, which result from the international engagement of Moldova. The experience of elaborating scientific reports and publications enables a successful assessment and generalization of scientific and methodical information. This fact reflects in the reports of RLRFC specialists, presented at different scientific meetings and conferences at regional and international level, as well as in numerous methodical publications, practical recommendations and cartographic works.

Presently, in order to increase the degree of veracity of the long range forecasts, the Center is testing the “analogy” method, elaborated by the National Meteorology Administration from Romania, with the purpose of determining its efficiency for Moldova’s conditions. Also, the Center plans to test the “homology” method, elaborated by the Regional Hydrometeorological Centre from Sankt Petersburg.

One of the prospective functions of this Center is the evaluation of the possibility of adjusting a regional numeric model of atmosphere, taking into account weather conditions and particularities on the territory of Moldova.
