Sixteenth World Meteorological Congress 16 May – 3 June 2011, Geneva, Switzerland
In the period 16 May – 3 June 2011, in Geneva, Switzerland, there will take place the Sixteenth World Meteorological Congress of WMO, including the High Level Segment of the Congress that will take place on 16-17 May 2011. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations in the field of meteorology, hydrology and other geophysical sciences, which was founded in 1951. The WMO objectives are: promotion of the establishment and maintenance of systems for the rapid exchange of meteorological and related information; promotion of standardization of meteorological and related observations and to ensure the uniform publication of observations and statistics; further the application of meteorology to aviation, shipping, water problems, agriculture and other human activities; promotion of activities in operational hydrology and to further close cooperation between Meteorological and Hydrological Services; encouragement of research and training in meteorology and, as appropriate, in related fields, and to assist in coordinating the international aspects of such research and training. The Republic of Moldova became member of WMO on 29 July 1994 by the Parliament Resolution No. 210-XIII. In line with Article 2 of the Resolution, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova with WMO is the Director of the State Hydrometeorological Service. Thus, SHS as a state institution subordinated to the Ministry of Environment, represents and promotes the interests of Moldova in the field of meteorology, hydrology and environmental quality monitoring as related to international organizations and to other NHMSs. The World Meteorological Congress brings together representatives of all Members (States and Territories) at least once every four years. As the supreme body of the World Meteorological Organization, it determines the Organization’s general policies, programmes and budget; reviews the WMO community; determines the General, Technical, Financial and Staff Regulations; establishes and coordinates the activities of the WMO bodies. The members of WMO may present interesting suggestions/proposals for debates within the plenary meetings of the Congress according to the priorities of the strategic plan, among which: Global Framework for Climate Services, capacity building, disaster risk reduction, strengthened information and observation systems, and aeronautical meteorology. The works of the High Level Segment will be chaired by the WMO Chairman and will include reports of the Secretary General and of the WMO Chairman. The Delegations of the High Level Segment will also have the opportunity to present a report. The Republic of Moldova will be represented at the Congress by the Permanent Mission of Moldova to the UN Office in Geneva.
