The climatic and agroclimatic characterization August
on the territory the Republic of Moldova

In August the long term average air temperature in the territory is between +19ºÑ in the Northern part and +21ºÑ in the Southern part. The coldest August since the beginning of instrumental observations was recorded in 1976, when the monthly average air temperature varied between +15,3ºC (Briceni) and +17,8ºC (Tiraspol, Comrat). The warmest August was recorded in 1946 and 1992, when the monthly average air temperature varied between +22,8ºC (Briceni) and +25,7ºC (Cahul).

The daily average air temperature in August oscillates. The daily minimum of air temperature in the country during the last years constituted +8..+11ºC (1947), while the maximum was of +29..+31ºC (1946). The absolute minimum of air temperature during the whole period of observations constituted +2,0ºC (Bravicea, 23 August 2006), and the absolute maximum was of +40,5ºC  (Tiraspol, 25 August 2007).

The amount of precipitation in August constitutes in average 40-77 mm, and the number of days with precipitations is about 7-10 days. According to long term observations, the greatest amount of precipitations in August was of 353 mm (Soroca, 2004), and the greatest daily amount of 180 mm (Rîșcani, 2005). Nevertheless, there were registered years with no precipitations (Anenii Noi, Cimișlia - 2001).

In July there may occur thunderstorms (in average 4-6 days), heavy hail (1-2 days) and fogs (1-2 days).

Among the extreme meteorological phenomena, the most dangerous in August are the heavy rains and hail, which occur annually. Heavy rains, strong winds and storms may be recorded once in 6 years, the vortexes – in average once in 30 years. Extremely dangerous may be the summer droughts that may occur once in 4 years.

The milk ripeness of maize grains is observed on 8-18 August. The average long term moisture reserves in the soil layer of 1 meter depth in the Northern and Central part are usually good and constitutes in this period 90-110 mm, in the Southern part - satisfying, 55-85 mm. According to the long term average data, in late August - early September, the wax ripeness of maize is observed. In this period the plants need moisture reduces considerably.

In August the sugar beet continues to thicken its main root, and starting from the third decade of August, the sugar beet yellowing of outer leaves is noted. According to long term average data, by the end of August, the need of sugar beets in water is greatly reduced, and productive moisture reserves are generally of 65-85mm.

At the end of August, usually the maturation of the late varieties of apples, pears and plums is recorded. In the Southern areas, in late August, occurs the grape maturity. According to long term average data, the productive humidity reserves in the soil layer of 1 meter depth on the vineyard lands are usually satisfactory at the end of August and constitute 65-110 mm.

The increase of the green mass of the fodder crops (alfalfa, multiannual plants) is recorded after the second mowing.
